Services Offered

Mad Spark Editing offers the following services:

Stylistic Editing & Copy Editing: Clarifying meaning, eliminating jargon, polishing language, and other non-mechanical line-by-line editing. Checking for grammar, usage, spelling, punctuation, and other mechanics of style; checking for consistency of mechanics and for internal consistency of facts.

Rates are based on a four-week timeline. Any “rush” job will be negotiated at the time of inquiry and before a contract is signed by either party.

There is a minimum fee of $100 for anything under 25,000 words.

$0.005       25,000 – 49,999 words

$0.006        50,000 – 75,000 words

$0.007        75,001 – 100,000 words

$0.008       100,001 – 125,000 words

If your novel exceeds 125,000 words, a separate price and schedule will be discussed and agreed upon before the contract is finalized.

Substantive/Structural/Developmental Editing: Clarifying or reorganizing a manuscript for content and structure.

The most intensive form of editing is substantive editing. The document is evaluated as a whole and problems of structure, organization, coherence, and logical consistency are corrected. Sentences may be removed or added. Paragraphs may be rewritten, condensed, or expanded. Blocks of text may be moved from one section to another.

Cost and turnaround time will be negotiated, but will not exceed $0.018* per word or five weeks, and will be determined after the document is received by the editor, evaluated, and discussed with the client.

*The cost of stylistic and copy editing is included in this rate.

Proofreading: examining your text carefully to find and correct typographical errors and mistakes in grammar, style, and spelling.

Rates to be determined by the length of the document, but will not exceed more than $0.002 per word unless further edits are needed and a new contract is negotiated.

Blurb Assistance: the blurb is evaluated as a whole and problems of structure, organization, coherence, logical consistency, typographical errors, mistakes in grammar, style, and spelling are corrected. Sentences may be removed or added. Paragraphs may be rewritten, condensed, or expanded. Blocks of text may be moved from one section to another.

The cost is a flat rate of $25.00 and will only be charged when the author is satisfied with the final version.

Alpha Reading: An alpha reader is someone who reads a written work before it is sent to the beta readers with the intent to help the Author restructure the manuscript and offer suggestions pertaining to plot and character development.

< 50,000 = $100.00

50,001 – 75,000 = $120.00

75,001 – 100,000 = $130.00

100,001 – 125,000 = $150.00

150,001 – 175,000 = $170.00

Beta Reading: A beta reader is a someone that reads a written work with the intent of looking over the material to find and improve the story, its characters, and its setting. Elements highlighted by beta readers encompass aspects such as plot holes, problems with continuity, characterization, and believability. Beta reading is typically done before the story has been edited.

You may ask yourself why you might consider paying for beta reading when so many of your fans are willing to read your novel for free. The answer is twofold: Your fans love you and don’t always point out areas of opportunity because they don’t want to come across as unappreciative. Also, very few are professional editors with an eye for finding common mistakes.

The cost for beta reading depends on the word count and is listed below.

< 50,000 = $50.00

50,001 – 75,000 = $70.00

75,001 – 100,000 = $90.00

100,001 – 125,000 = $110.00

150,001 – 175,000 = $130.00
